VVHen fortie Winters shall beseige thy brow,
And digge deep trenches in thy beauties field,
Thy youthes proud liuery so gaz’d on now,
Wil be a totter’d weed of smal worth held:
Then being askt,where all thy beautie lies,
Where all the treasure of thy lusty daies;
To say within thine owne deepe sunken eyes,
Were an all-eating shame,and thriftlesse praise.
How much more praise deseru’d thy beauties vse,
If thou couldst answere this faire child of mine
Shall sum my count,and make my old excuse
Proouing his beautie by succession thine.
  This were to be new made when thou art ould,
  And see thy blood warme when thou feel’st it could,

Will be a tottered weed of small worth held.
Then, being asked, where all thy beauty lies,
Where all the treasure of thy lusty days,
To say, within thine own deep-sunken eyes,

How much more praise deserved thy beauty’s use,
If thou couldst answer: “This fair child of mine
Shall sum my count, and make my old excuse”,
Proving his beauty by succession thine.
   This were to be new-made when thou art old,
   And see thy blood warm when thou feel’st it cold.

1 forty Winters

Касательно физического деторождения возраст 40 лет является критическим лишь для женщины, поэтому 7 из 13 рукописных копий Сонета 2 имеют заглавия: “Той, которая хочет умереть Девственнницей” (To one yt would dye a Mayd – 5 копий), “Влюбленный – своей Госпоже” (A lover to his Mistres, 1), “Превосходства семейной жизни” (The Benefitt of Mariage, 1); еще в одной стоит цифра не 40 (‘fortie’), а 60 (‘threscore’). В действительности же ‘40’ символизирует период испытания, а Зима завершает собою жизненный цикл (6) – как годовой, так и отдельной человеческой жизни или общественного века.

1-2 besiege, trenches, beauty’s field – Время – враг, который осаждает (Природой данную) Красоту, ведя с ней войну на (также Природой данном) поле этой Красоты.

3 youth’s proud livery – Роскошная от Природы ‘ливрея юности’ (и тело, как ‘служебная одежда души’, и ‘наряд души’ как строй молодого ума-mind) износится, если не печься о том, чья это ливрея, кому и чему эта ливрейная душа служит. Cм. the Rose, в сонете 1.2-4.

4  weed = 1) дикое, полевое растение; трава, в т.ч.  сорняк
